Considering Brainspotting? Here's What You Can Expect.

Trying a new type of therapy can feel both hopeful and uncertain. If you've been curious about Brainspotting therapy, you may be wondering what happens during a session and whether it differs from traditional talk therapy.

While every person's experience is unique, understanding what to expect in a Brainspotting therapy session ahead of time can help you feel more comfortable taking the first step.

At Inner Harbor Counseling, Brainspotting is integrated thoughtfully into therapy based on your individual needs, goals, and readiness. There is no pressure to share more than you're comfortable with, and the process moves at a pace that feels manageable for you.

What Is Brainspotting?

Brainspotting is a therapeutic approach that helps people process experiences, emotions, and patterns that may feel difficult to fully access through talking alone.

Rather than focusing only on understanding experiences intellectually, Brainspotting creates an opportunity to notice and work with what may be happening beneath conscious awareness.

If you're new to Brainspotting, you may find it helpful to read "What Is Brainspotting?" first.

What to Expect During Your First Brainspotting Therapy Session

The first Brainspotting session usually begins much like traditional therapy.

We'll spend time discussing:

  • what brings you to therapy

  • your goals

  • any concerns or questions you have

  • whether Brainspotting feels like an appropriate fit

There is no expectation that Brainspotting begins immediately. We will first focus on getting to know each other and building comfort and trust before introducing the process.

Finding a Brainspot

Once we've identified what you'd like to work on, I'll guide you through the process of finding a brainspot. You may be asked to bring your attention to a particular emotion, memory, or physical sensation related to what you're experiencing. As you focus on that experience, I'll guide your attention across your visual field and help you notice where your eyes naturally want to rest.

That point of focus, or brainspot, becomes the place where we begin the processing work. You may notice that certain spots feel different from others, perhaps one feels more intense, meaningful, or connected to what you're experiencing. There is no right or wrong spot, and you don't have to figure it out on your own. I'll guide you through the process and help you notice what comes up.

Once we've found a brainspot, you'll be invited to stay with your experience while maintaining awareness of what you're noticing internally. You might notice emotions, physical sensations, memories, thoughts, or images arise. You don't need to make sense of everything as it happens or force yourself to remember anything. The process is about allowing your experience to unfold while having support and guidance along the way.

What Does It Feel Like?

Every person's experience is different.

Some people notice:

  • emotions becoming clearer

  • physical sensations shifting

  • new insights emerging

  • memories connecting in unexpected ways

  • a greater sense of calm afterward

Others simply notice subtle changes that become more apparent over time.

There isn't a "right" way to experience Brainspotting. The process looks different for everyone.

Do I Have to Talk During Brainspotting?

While some people talk throughout the process, others spend more time quietly noticing thoughts, emotions, or physical sensations.

There is no expectation to explain everything you're experiencing. You're always welcome to share as much, or as little, as feels comfortable.

What If Strong Emotions Come Up?

It's natural to wonder whether difficult emotions might arise during Brainspotting.

Sometimes they do.

If that happens, you won't be expected to manage them on your own.

Part of my role is to help create a supportive environment where you can stay connected to the present while gently exploring what comes up. The process is collaborative, and we move at a pace that feels appropriate for you.

You remain in control throughout the session, and we can pause, slow down, or shift the focus whenever needed.

Is Brainspotting The Right Fit?

If you're wondering whether Brainspotting might be a good fit for you, learning more about who can benefit from Brainspotting therapy can be a helpful place to start.

Brainspotting can be helpful for many people, including those experiencing:

Like any therapeutic approach, Brainspotting isn't one-size-fits-all. Together, we'll determine whether it fits your goals and whether it feels like the right approach for where you are.

Can Brainspotting Be Done in an Intensive Format?

While many people benefit from integrating Brainspotting into regular therapy sessions, others may choose an intensive format for more focused work. At Inner Harbor Counseling, Brainspotting is also available through intensive sessions, which provide dedicated time to focus more deeply on a specific concern or area of healing in an extended format.

A Brainspotting Intensive differs from a typical therapy session because it allows for a longer, uninterrupted period of focused work. Depending on your needs and goals, an intensive may be scheduled as a two- or three-hour session, or as two extended sessions back-to-back.

Before an intensive, we'll talk about what you'd like to focus on and determine whether this format feels appropriate for you. You'll also have time afterward to reflect on the experience and develop a personalized plan for continuing to integrate the work.

An intensive isn't about trying to accomplish everything in one session. Instead, it creates additional space for focused therapeutic work while allowing the process to unfold at a pace that feels manageable and supported.

How Therapy at Inner Harbor Counseling Approaches Brainspotting

Brainspotting is one tool among many that may be incorporated into therapy.

Rather than following a rigid formula, sessions are tailored to your individual needs and experiences. Sometimes Brainspotting is used throughout a session, while other times it may be integrated alongside conversation, reflection, and other therapeutic approaches.

The focus is always on helping you better understand yourself, process difficult experiences, and move toward meaningful, lasting change.

Taking the First Step
